BLOOD DRIVE
6 th Annual American Red Cross
Blood Drive at Gunpowder Baptist Church
Everyone, let’s not forget about our American Red Cross Blood Drive coming up on Thursday, May 12, 2005 from 2:30-8:00 p.m. in the fellowship room . Spring is in the air and that means new life for everyone the Lord has created. Give someone in need of lifesaving blood the chance to live their life to the fullest. That one person might be a coworker, a soldier, a fire worker, police officer, an innocent accident victim or someone very near and dear to your own family. So, please come on out and donate just a little bit of your time for the blood donation process, or if you are squeamish about needles, you can work at the registration desk or in the refreshment area.
The sign-up sheet is on the counter in the main lobby of the church building. Thanks in advance for your support for a successful blood drive.
Lorraine Herzberg
Blood Drive Coordinator

MEDIA LIBRARY
It’s that time of the year to spring clean all of the nooks and crannies of your home. Although I appreciate the thought of donating your old books and videos to the Media Center, please talk to me first. We have limited space and I would like to avoid duplications or materials that I know would not be used at GBC.
Thanks,
Jeanne Botzler

A Word of Thanks
Dear Church Family,
We would like to thank everyone for the wonderful show of love for us during the illness and death of my mom, Charlotte Kohls. She attended several functions at this church over the years and would have been touched by your caring. The many cards, dinners, calls and prayers were greatly appreciated.
Most especially, we would like to thank Pastor Jack for his many visits to the hospice and speaking at her memorial service.
With love,
Jeanne & Paul Botzler
Dear Church Family,
I would like to thank you for all your cards, phone calls, words of encouragement and most of all, your prayers during my recent illness. It is wonderful to have such a loving and caring church family. I am truly blessed.
With Christian love,
Ruth Taylor

THEME: Ramblin’ Road Trip
Which Way Do I Go?
Psalm 25:4, “Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths”
_______________________________________________________
God has continued to bless us here at Gunpowder over and over again, particularly when it comes to our young people. In the past two months, we have seen God work in the lives of our teens like I have never seen before. These teenagers are starting to take a stand for Christ unashamedly. I can see that some of their relationships are genuine and I am so proud of them. Does that mean all of our teenagers have reached this point in their walk with God? I wish I could say that was the case, but it isn’t, and that’s why the leaders at Teen Time and Sunday School need your help.
Recently, Earl and Debbie Copenhaver, along with Sue and myself, had the honor of attending the Pastor’s Conference in Jacksonville, Florida. During the course of the week, I took the time to realy listen to what God had to say to me. He spoke to me loud and clear and this is one of the things He said to me. “Jeff, it is not about how many teens show up at Sunday School and to Wednesday Night Teen Time. It’s about how you love and minister to those that are there on any given day or night.”
You see, I have the tendency to measure our success by the number of teens coming, and that can be very dangerous. For the longest time, I just had a hard time understanding why so many of our churched teens don’t come to Teen Time at all, and why so many of our Teen Timers don’t come to Sunday School. This has been burdened me for a long time and I have pondered on how to bridge the gap between the two. I would drive myself nuts trying to figure out what I was doing wrong as their Youth Pastor, and why I couldn’t get all of the teens to come to both. It wasn’t until we were in Jacksonville that God told me, “Jeff, that’s not your responsibility, it’s their parents.”
A Note to Our Parents:
Parents, I am asking for your help in this matter. We as parents need to take every step we have available to make sure our teens are put into a position to hear the Word of God. How can we expect our teens to want to come to church on a Wednesday night when we don’t come? How can we expect our teens to look forward to Sunday School when we reluctantly drag ourselves out the door to go? Some of the best times at church are on Sunday evenings and we only have about twenty people that show up, which is about 8 percent of the people that come on Sunday mornings. As parents, we set the direction that our teenagers will take in their walk with the Lord. If we have no desire to grow in our own relationship, we shouldn’t expect our teens to have a desire to grow. Whether we like to admit it or not, our teens will emulate our walk with the Lord when they are on their own; that is if they don’t fall prey along with 85% of teenagers that quit going to church altogether upon graduation.
Parents, I am asking each of us to stretch ourselves a little in our personal walk with the Lord so we can be the examples God wants us to be to our teenagers. What does this mean? It simply means doing a little more for the Lord than we are doing presently. We need to use the gifts God has given us and stop making excuses for why we don’t get involve.
Examples include:
Start teaching. I’m sure Miss Carolyn can find a place to use you.
Get involved with the Helping Up Mission, the Meals Ministry, Faith Ministry, etc.
Become active in sending cards to those that are hurting or visit those who are sick.
Start going to Sunday School on a regular basis.
Start singing in the choir or volunteer to read scripture on Sunday mornings.
Start tithing. (That is 10% of your household income).
Begin attending all church services.
Sacrifice a little more of your time and start being obedient to what God wants.
If we want God to bless this church and to bless our children, we need to conduct ourselves in the Will of God. Our teenagers are watching us. I know I keep saying this, but some of us don’t think they are watching us, and sadly some of us really don’t take the time to think about it. We need your help in leading your teenager in a real relationship with Jesus. I am convinced it all starts in the home. The teen leaders cannot make your child have this relationship with Christ when we have them for one or two hours a week. Their walk with the Lord must be a way of life in the family home and we must lead by example. We really want our young people to have a personal relationship with the Lord, then we need to be a team in guiding them into that direction. We owe it to them and to our Lord to give as much of ourselves as we can to them, but most importantly, to our Heavenly Father.
Let’s stand strong and unite in this area. If they are going to be the 15% that go on with their walk, then we need to start stretching and getting ready for the long eternal walk that is ahead of us as we walk right beside our teens.
More Teen News
On March 5 th, the Children’s Department and the teens went snow tubing at Ski Roundtop for four hours. A lot of fun was had by all; even those who stayed in the lodge and drank hot chocolate. We want to thank Joan Krebs and Judy Bryant for coordinating this event. A huge THANK YOU goes to the individual who anonymously donated the money for 30+ people to go on this trip.
Prayer Request: One of our teens, Asa Keimig, underwent a major operation on March 21 st. He received a kidney from Wayne Holle, who is a member of Asa’s church and is 41 years old. Please keep Wayne in your prayers as well. He will be out of work for approximately 2 months. Wayne works on commission and will be without income during this time. He has a family of five to provide for. If anyone feels led to make a donation to this family, please see me.
Recently two of our Wednesday night teen timers, Stephanie Voland and Asa Keimig, gave their testimonies in front of their peers. I know how proud I was of them so I can only imagine how proud God is of them for taking a stand and sharing with the other teens how God can truly work in one’s life if you really allow Him to. The teens had a lot of questions and it was just amazing to see the Holy Spirit working in the lives of our young people on these two Wednesday nights. We invite our congregation and teen time parents to visit us from tiem to time or on a regular basis. Teens were literally coming from every direction two Wednesday’s ago amounting to 42 in total. God is really working wonders.
Please keep all of the youth leaders in your prayers as we are so blessed to have them taking the time they do to bring the word of God to our young people. They are as follows, and if I missed anyone, please forgive me. Jason, Sherry & Chip Weisenborn, Debbie Copenhaver, Dori Morrel, Doug Walker, Barbara Bobbitt, Kathy & David Harrison, George Rebstad, Rick Ivey, and Jeff, Sue & Shannon Tracey.
Attention Parents of High School Girls:
Sue will be holding a special Friday evening get-together once a month for our High School girls starting April 15. The book is titled, “Girls” published by Youth Specialties. The book has 10 lessons and the girls could meet for 8 months or longer depending on how the sessions go. Sue’s plan is to have the girls come over, cook dinner, and then discuss the lesson and get real about the God-centered sessions on what matters to girls. The High School girls will get more information soon.

The Keenagers
On Monday, April 11 th we had quite a challenge. Judy Dausinger made up plastic bottles filled with bird seed and 15 other items in the bird seed. We were given 10 minutes to find all of these items. Pastor Jack found 12, Margaret Hege found 13 and Priscilla Ward found 11. There is supposed to be a penny in each bottle of bird seed but I still have not found it. But I will keep looking until I do find it.
Afterwards we went to the Cracker Barrel for lunch and had good food and a wonderful time.
As this goes to print we are going on a Mystery trip. Pastor Jack always has a great surprise for us and we always enjoy the day. You will have to tune in next month to find out where we went.
On M ay 1, we will have our annual Sr. Adult Day in church and then out for lunch afterwards. We hope you will join us for a great day of good food, fun and fellowship.
On May 26 th we are planning a trip to Lancaster’s Sight & Sound to see their new play, “Ruth”. After the play we will go to “Good and Plenty” restaurant for a delicious lunch. If you are interested in going please sign up on the sheet in the church lobby so we know how many tickets we need to purchase.
Your Keenager in Christ,
Myrtle Gettle

What a beautiful time of the year! As we observe life coming to bloom all around us, let us think about the planting and then the harvest at the end of summer. Will there be the fruit of the Spirit and righteousness of faith as evidence of Christ within us for others to see? Will they be drawn to the One who sowed His Word in the soil of our hearts?
The business meeting was held on April 10 with 11 people present. Please note on your calendar that the May meeting will be held on May 15 th – the third Sunday instead of the regular second one. The meeting will be held at 8:30 a.m.
After evaluating the space usage for each class and the average number of members present each Sunday, Adult V and Adult I were very close. Adult I has presently moved to the old classroom which was vacated by Adult III when they moved to the Masonic building across the street. Adult V (renamed Adult VI) has moved into the sanctuary overflow room formerly occupied by Adult I Class. Thus, we have one classroom vacant.
|
However, this space hopefully will not be empty long. There are two new classes being considered and a person has been asked to pray about teaching one of the classes. We ask all members to be in prayer concerning this matter.
In the L-section of the church there are four classrooms formed by closing the folding partitions. Needless to say the voices from classes on one side of the partition can be heard by class members on the other side. This presents some level of distraction for all concerned. Considerable discussion regarding the noise issue was addressed and actions have been or are being taken to improve/correct this situation.
The new schedule utilizing three regular teachers for teaching in two “partner” classes began the first of April. Under this schedule every teacher will teach two out of every three months. This will require fewer teachers for Sunday school and permit us to start new classes for more effectively meeting needs of the members. Many thanks to all the teachers and people involved in this new undertaking!
The new form to communicate absentee contact information was distributed to class teachers and leaders. The procedure was explained to the members and will be followed up by Conchita Whitaker, FAITH Coordinator, with the class Outreach Leaders.
Class updates on Evangelism, Bible study, fellowship, ministry, discipleship and prayer were reported by each class. Attendance has been generally good in all classes whereas fellowships have not. The need and intent of Sunday School fellowships were discussed and many ideas were given. One great idea was to incorporate Bible study into the fellowship as a great way to grow spiritually. Adult I has been practicing this for a long a time and found it to be true.
Adult IV (renamed Adult V) does rate an “A” in fellowship with trips to various places as the Gaither concert and the Tabernacle in PA as well as having a monthly fellowship in a member’s home.
In one or more of the above disciplines every class deserves an “A” with absolutely every class earning an “A” in the area of prayer. Our Sunday School is packed with members who are faithful, conscientious prayer warriors. We are so blessed.
At the heart of the Faith Ministry is the Sunday School class. FAITH is an evangelism training strategy and process linked directly to the ongoing work of the Sunday School ministry. FAITH helps build commitment.
Currently, the FAITH teams are comprised of members from different Sunday school classes. Ideally it is hoped eventually all members of a FAITH team will be from the same class so that when a prospect or ministry visits are made, there will be a direct connection with the Sunday School class. Sunday School is the foundational strategy in a local church for leading people to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and for building Great Commission Christians through Bible study groups that engage people in evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry and worship. Aren’t we blessed to be in Sunday School classes with teachers who really know how to teach God’s Word effectively?
Please reflect upon this quotation by Charles H. Spurgeon: “Little faith will bring your souls to Heaven, but great faith will bring Heaven to your souls.”
In His Service,
Carolyn C. Foster, Director

SALADS: Tossed, potato, macaroni, pasta, broccoli salad, waldorf salad, jello salads, fruit salad

FAITH Ministry
Spring has arrived! With spring we think of plants emerging from the soil, grass becoming green, trees getting their leaves, flowers their buds and birds looking for twigs to make their nests. The sign of birth is everywhere!
Well, Faith Ministry thinks of all that too, but even more so that it is a wonderful time to focus more intently on those who are lost, those people who do not know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior! It’s time for the members to “plant the seeds”, that is, the Seeds of Salvation. It’s time to think of a re birth for the lost!
Perhaps this is the month God desires for you to focus more intently upon a loved one or a friend or neighbor whom you know that does not know Christ. Wouldn’t it be the most horrible thing of which you can think to realize that you won’t see that person in Heaven and if only you had witnessed to him/her, it would have made the difference? You may be just the person God has appointed to lead them to the foot of the Cross.
The past month has been a very had month due to so much sickness, surgeries, work schedules, etc. One Sunday there were not enough ladies to form a team, and this is rare. However, the teams still went out. The members without a team leader joined the Onsite Prayer Team. Some of the greatest celebrations resulted from visits made during these ties. God is so good!
Most of our recent visits have been ministry visits referred by the Sunday School classes, zip code listings, or opinion polls. There have hardly been any referrals from church services. Please ask visitors to fill out the Visitor’s Card as we really want to visit with them unless they live too far away. Then we send a card thanking them for visiting and asking them to come again whenever the opportunity arises. We really need your help.
During April we made many ministry visits referred by the Sunday School classes. Never have we had so many thanks, calls and notes for our visits. One Sunday a team had the name of a couple to visit. When they arrived, the couple was away. However, the lady’s father was there. The team talked with him and found out he did not know Christ. When the team left, the father was on the verge of accepting Christ as his Lord and Savior. A follow-up visit is in the team’s next step. This is what FAITH calls “A Divine Appointment”. The team went to visit the couple, but God planned for the team to witness to the father. Every week we are blessed by God in marvelous and most extraordinary life-changing adventures. Our cups truly runneth over!
When we make visits and the person is not home, we leave information about our church. This month we were given large colorful door hangers with the Who, What, When and Where of our Vacation Bible School. We thank the VBS staff for providing us with very visible reminders which can be displayed in the homes of those we visit. This was a great way to advertise our VBS.
The members of FAITH truly thank you for all your prayers and cherish each and every one.
In His Service,
Carolyn C. Foster

7:30 – 9:00 p.m.
“Abiding in Christ – It’s Deeper Than Chocolate”
In keeping with our lighthearted theme of A=Abiding in Christ (Untalent Show), we will look at how our lives, when centered on Christ, can be lighthearted as well.
Sign up in the church lobby.

Untalent Show / Movie Night
The Untalent Show / Movie Night was a blast. We have so much more untalent in this church than ever dreamed possible. We had several skits including the following:
Pee Wee Herzberg showed up and did the Big Shoe Dance, big shoes and all!
Diane Ivey showed us that she, indeed, cannot whistle. She cannot whistle a verse, or a chorus – she just can’t whistle. At all!
Mary Scheurman played a few notes on the harmonica until the giggles overtook her breath and she had to give up. Bob, you really did teach her a little something!
Conchita Whitaker and Mary Hamrick dispelled the rumor that one of them had been a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader – though the cheer that was written by a male member of the Whitaker family did show great potential untalent.
Missy Walker did a great rendition of a youth cheer – We believe that, based on her skills, she entered the wrong contest.
Chelsea Whitaker brought her dog, Dude, who did some “crazy pet-tricks”. The women watched from the huge plate-glass window in the Ivey home.
Barbara Covington brought to us a supply of “red neck” jokes – unfortunately, most of us women in attendance could relate to most of the jokes because we live in the country.
Lorraine Herzberg couldn’t decide what she was most untalented at, so she gave us opportunity to see her try to hoola-hoop and to also try her hand at catching a ball on a string, which required quite a bit of coordination. She also brought out the “big sunglasses” to entertain us with her last untalent – it showed so much untalent, that the name of the skit escapes me.
We had some demonstrations of tongue dysfunctions (rolling the tongue, folding the tongue – the evening must have gotten a little slow).
The final act was “Dualing Noses” performed by Conchita and Mary to the tune of Dueling Banjos.
The women brought finger foods for munching – and I dare say, the Gunpowder Baptist Church women – hands down- have very much talent in this area.
The Women’s Ministry events are planned monthly for ALL women of the church and community. Everyone is invited, come one – come all!

Tuesday Evening Women’s Bible Study
All Women Welcome!
In Luke 6:45, Jesus taught that the overflow of our heart is what our mouth speaks.
Have you ever been astounded of words that came out of your mouth? When we consider that our words reveal the character of our lives, we should become greater gatekeepers of our mouths.
Beginning Tuesday, April 26th, from 7:00-8:00 p.m., we will begin a 7 week study, “Conversation Peace – The Power of Transformed Speech” by Mary Kassian. The Bible sets a high standard for our speech, thoughts and attitudes and this study presents seven powerful speech-transforming elements that are based on scripture. The heart of this study is about God changing our hearts. He has given us His word to transform and revolutionize our words and lead us into conversation peace.
Sign-up sheet in church lobby or call 410-357-0658 to register.
